how we got started.

Romulus Media was created by Walt Smithers, a senior at the College of William and Mary. Walt has been primarily interested in one thing his entire life: what is attention? how is it created? how can it be used? Growing up around social media, he observed the never-ending wrestling match for attention — either by peers or by brands. One thing was for sure … people are desperate for eyeballs. Attention is the new currency. So, he sought out how we can get attention. Humbly starting as a freelance digital marketer, he turned his attention to influencers after noticing how adept his generation was at avoiding ads. This brought him to the “influencer incubator”, REACH. After serving as Chief Operating Officer of the national student organization, REACH, and expanding its campus presence from 4 campuses all the way to 50+ campuses, he saw the value of coordinated student efforts, student influencers, and students creating content. Throughout his tenure at REACH, Walt cultivated a vast network of students who were not only passionate about making an impact on their campuses but also showed a keen interest in leveraging their influence to promote and work alongside brands. It was this realization—the untapped potential of student influencers and content creators—that sparked the idea for Romulus Media. Walt saw the opportunity to bridge the gap between brands and the dynamic college demographic by harnessing the creativity, energy, and influence of college students. Thus, Romulus Media was born, with a mission to connect brands with the college audience through authentic, engaging, and innovative marketing strategies.
